Game Night Etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts | Rollacrit

A game night is the perfect excuse to bring together friends and family for a good time. Whether you’re there for the friendly competition or just for the snacks, these game night do’s and don’ts will ensure you’re always invited back for the next round!

Do’s:

Do Be Inclusive: It’s important to create an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome, especially when you have a mixed group of experienced and new players. If someone is new to a game, take time to explain the rules and offer support. No one wants to feel lost or excluded during a game night–it can quickly put a damper on the fun!

Do Keep the Game Moving: Be mindful of downtime and long pauses between turns. If it’s your turn, try to make decisions fairly quickly. Avoid overthinking every possible move. Depending on the game, strategy may be key, but don’t let the analysis paralysis take over! Keeping the pace up helps maintain energy and keep the game interesting.

Do Offer Snacks and Drinks: Some food and drink can go a long way in keeping everyone energized and engaged during a long night of gaming. If you’re the host, be mindful of any dietary restrictions and have a variety of snacks and beverages to ensure everyone has something to enjoy.

Do Take Breaks: If game night runs late into the night, it’s a good idea to schedule some breaks. Continuous gameplay can result in mental fatigue, making it harder to stay focused. Regular breaks can help maintain focus and keep the game from feeling like a marathon. Whether it’s a quick stretch, a snack refill, or stepping outside for fresh air, a little pause in gameplay can make the overall experience more enjoyable.

Do Communicate: If you're hosting a game night, tell your guests what type of games you’ll be playing. Should they expect something quick and causal or in-depth and strategic? This allows for everyone to come prepared.

Don’ts:

Don’t Be Rules Obsessed: While it’s important to understand and follow the rules of a game, obsessing over every detail can disrupt the fun and the pace of gameplay. If there is a disagreement about the rules among the group, try to settle it quickly by reviewing the rulebook and/or taking a vote on how the group wants to proceed.

Don’t Take the Game Too Seriously: Remember, the main goal of a game night is to have fun and enjoy your time with the people you love! Some healthy and friendly competition is welcome, and it’s okay to play to win, but don’t let it get the best of you! Avoid being a sore loser or winner, as that can dampen the mood.

Don’t Hog the Spotlight: Even if you're an experienced player, remember that it’s important to include everyone. Don’t dominate the conversation or feel the need to over-explain things to others. While your enthusiasm is welcome, everyone learns differently and at their own pace. Let them engage with the game and allow them to figure some things out on their own.

Don’t Skip Out on Cleanup: When the night starts winding down and the final game ends, don’t vanish like a rogue in the night. Be sure to stick around and help tidy up afterward–pack away game pieces, wipe away any snack crumbs, and put things back where they belong.

By following these simple guidelines, you can help ensure that game nights are full of laughs and zero headaches. Happy gaming!
